    Dev 1. Debt is a very touchy and difficult subject. The issue with taking on a loan in your own name is that you own the debt. If anything happens to your parents and they can not repay you then you are responsible for the debt. This means that you will have to repay the debt or risk the consequences of bad debt, defaulting and court judgements involved in the recovery of the debt. This affects your credit rating meaning that any other loans like home loans, if you are even awarded them, will be at a much higher interest rate. At a very minimum you stand to lose everything.

    One thing that your parents can do is approach their creditors individually with a statement of income versus expenditure. If they are not receiving an income then they can still try to contact their creditors to negotiate a solution. Failing that they do not really have an option but to declare bankruptcy at which point it will be more valuabel to be there for them.


    Dev 2 - The best way to not have them come and give them a taste of their own medicine is to suddenly have plans of your own, regardless of how real they may be. Make it very clear that they will be coming to an empty house/flat/caravan and that you are going to be on the road with a biker gang. Kidding aside, to me the problem is that they believe that you have a dependancy on them and they are using this as a power play. Developing plans of your own without their "permission" and causing a conflict with their plans will start to make them doubt this dependancy and will cause them to rethink their relationship with you.
